Welcome to Wrexham! Often called the unofficial capital of North Wales, the city in northeast Wales is known for its industrial history, football club, and the TV documentary series Welcome to Wrexham. Situated on the River Clywedog, just five miles west of the border with England.
Once a prominent industrial center, it’s now embracing its rich history while forging a new path forward, fueled by community spirit and a touch of Hollywood magic.
Wrexham’s story stretches back centuries. Evidence suggests human activity in the area dates back to the Mesolithic period. The town flourished during the Industrial Revolution, driven by industries like coal mining, ironworks, and brewing. This era left its mark on the cityscape, with grand Victorian buildings and a network of canals that once hummed with activity.
Wrexham boasts a wealth of historical attractions. St. Giles’ Parish Church, with its distinctive spire, is a prominent landmark. The town center, a charming blend of old and new, invites exploration, with independent shops, traditional pubs, and the iconic Guildhall. For a dose of industrial heritage, a visit to the Bersham Ironworks, one of the earliest ironworks in Wales, is a must.
In recent years, Wrexham has garnered global attention thanks to the arrival of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as owners of the local football club, Wrexham AFC. Their investment and the subsequent documentary series, ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, have not only revitalised the club but also injected a renewed sense of pride and optimism into the community.
Wrexham’s location offers easy access to some of North Wales’ most stunning scenery. The nearby Berwyn Mountains provide opportunities for hiking, cycling, and breathtaking views. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a marvel of engineering and a popular tourist destination.
